Pre-ApprenticeshipProgram (Project JumpStart) Update

JOTF is proud to announce that we have five of our graduates from our construction training program, Jumpstart, that are now officially apprentices. All have been placed in apprenticeship positions and are moving forward in the process to become Journeymen. “These graduates have demonstrated that the program can be successful,” says Jumpstart caseworker Hassan James. “They have shown a strong desire to succeed and demonstrated exemplary work ethic through these thirteen weeks and because of that, they are now apprentices.”

Project Jumpstart is designed to assist low income residents enter a career in construction and advance them to higher wage positions in the building and construction fields. The students enter a rigorous 13 week training program learning the basics of electrical work, carpentry and plumbing. After the training, JOTF and its partner, ABC Construction, assist in placing them in apprenticeship positions.

Congratulations to our new apprentices!!!

New York Times, "Criminal Records Erased by Courts Live to Tell Tales"

The New York Times Adam Liptak reports, October 17, 2006 how in forty-one states, people accused or convicted of crimes can have their criminal records expunged. In theory this means that all traces of their encounters with the justice system will disappear. However, with the introduction of vast commercial databases, these are fast undoing the societal bargain of expungement, one that used to give people who had committed minor crimes a fresh start.

Working Poor Families Project, "Promoting Student Success in Community Colleges by Increasing Support Services"

With support from the Annie E. Casey, Ford, Joyce, and Mott foundations, the Working Poor Families Project works primarily to assess and strengthen state efforts to help low-income families advance and achieve economic security.

As the national economy evolves and a greater premium is placed on workers with postsecondary skills and credentials, states must find ways to encourage and enable students to complete a certificate or degree. This policy brief identifies state strategies and policies to expand and enhance student support services and thereby foster higher retention and completion rates in postsecondary institutions and systems.
